| Course Information | |||||||||
| Description | Intensive study of and practice in the strategies and techniques for developing research-based expository and persuasive texts. Emphasis on effective and ethical rhetorical inquiry, including primary and secondary research methods; critical reading of verbal, visual, and multimedia texts; systematic evaluation, synthesis, and documentation of information sources; and critical thinking about evidence and conclusions. | ||||||||

All readings are available online for free. Assigned readings will be announced and released in class. | Corequisites/Prerequisites | Basic skills competency in reading and writing required. Students whose degree plan requires both English 1301 and 1302 must take these courses in sequence. | ||||||||
| Learning Outcomes | Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will: Demonstrate knowledge of individual and collaborative research processes. Develop ideas and synthesize primary and secondary sources within focused academic arguments, including one or more research-based essays. Analyze, interpret, and evaluate a variety of texts for the ethical and logical uses of evidence. Write in a style that clearly communicates meaning, builds credibility, and inspires belief or action. Apply the conventions of style manuals for specific academic disciplines (e.g., APA, CMS, MLA, etc.) | ||||||||

| Lecture Topics Outline | ALL of the writing in this class must be written by the student enrolled in the class without any outside help. Link to Student Handbook section, page 30, on plagiarism: http://www.lamarpa.edu/Lamar/media/Lamar/Files/StudentHandBook.pdf Plagiarism means the appropriation of a work or idea from another person and the unacknowledged incorporation that work or idea into one's own work offered for credit. Collusion means the unauthorized collaboration with another person preparing work for credit. All essays will be submitted through Blackboard's Safe Assign link and a hard copy will also be submitted at the end of class. Plagiarism will result in a ZERO on the assignment the first offense. If there is a second offense, the student will FAIL the course. In Class Students: Students will be asked to leave the classroom immediately if caught texting/using a phone or smart watch while working on ANY class assignment. If caught twice, they will not be allowed to return. Phones should be placed on the upper left desk corner during class. Brief glancing is acceptable; reading the screen is not. No late work. No makeup work. MUST bring flash drive & readings to class EVERY TIME we meet. Students will have to write IN class, during class, and write each paper by themselves without outside help. If a student is caught plagiarizing the grade is a 0. There is NO makeup assignment for a plagiarized paper. If he/she is plagiarizes a second time, the student will be asked not to return and an F will be given for the final course grade. | ||||||||

| Attendance Policy | Class attendance is mandatory. However, for either illness or emergencies, I will allow three absences for this course without penalty. For each subsequent absence, a letter grade will be deducted from your semester average. Student-athletes are exceptions to these rules and must provide me with the appropriate paperwork. | ||||||||

| COVID 19 Information | The Lamar State College Port Arthur (LSCPA) Student Code of Conduct COVID 19 Policy requires students who have been diagnosed with COVID 19 to report their condition directly to their local health department. Students should also contact their course faculty to report their quarantine status.
